Music that was labeled as ‘oldies’ when I was growing up affected me quite dramatically. I have VERY specific memories of my Dad’s reaction to this music. It was as if his entire demeanor changed when music from his past played. And the change that I observed and felt was ALWAYS for the ‘better’. His energy was more expressive and emotive. He seemed happier, more hopeful, more carefree, and quite honestly, like the music took him to another reality.
Communication skills (with those closest to him) & my Dad have had a rocky relationship in life – not at all unlike the majority of men (especially his age) and I dare say, increasingly, all of us as human beings living in 2013. Somehow, as a young child, I FELT what my Dad was trying to communicate to me via the songs he loved the most. He connected with the lyrics (more so than anything, I believe) and understood that the music takes those words and multiplies them exponentially. I believe, on some level, he knew these songs were expressing WAY more than he could ever imagine trying to do on his own, with words alone. And because of how strong a connection there has always been between my Dad and I AND given what I now know to be the Truth … I KNOW that we were communicating at a much higher level … one well beyond the words.
There was one record, more than any other, that elicited a reaction from my Dad that has remained with me since I was about 7 years old…’Jesus Chris Superstar’. Honoring the past indeed, Dad. Just allow the music to guide you home!
