Education

communityI have a large number of friends in the field of education – teachers, principals, professors, and researchers.  My educator friends are some of the most brillant, creative, kind-hearted, change-the-world folks I’ve ever met.  There are endless opportunities for brainstorming new ideas about expanding the world of education – how we define it, what it looks like, etc.  With funding, I would look to bring these folks together for more focused brainstorming sessions.

One of my greatest dreams is to have my own school.  I don’t yet have many specific ideas for how that would look because all I feel at this point is that it is drastically different than our schools of today.  I believe most everything would be done differently.  For now, I am focusing on creating new avenues for young people to learn and develop.  I am interested in setting up opportunities for apprenticeships…connecting friends of mine with their own businesses with teenagers and those in their 20s who have an interest in that particular area of work.

The world has changed significantly in the past 100 years with the classroom changing very, very little.  This is an ADD/ADHD world and we are still trying to have kids sit most of the day in classrooms!  We pretty much tell them they aren’t real contributors to the world until at least 18.  I taught 6th graders.  Their young, innocent views can be profound.  They are more than capable of contributing in bigger, more “real” ways than most are willing or able to see or admit.

There are three things I believe about education.  1)  There is always significantly more out there that we don’t know than what we do know.  2) Opportunities to learn never end & surround us all day, every day.  3) We are all here to be teachers AND students -regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or social class.  I aspire to create all new educational avenues that reflect the world of limitless possibilities that exist in the world at present.
